HOW TO INSTALL THE WERD DEVICE
HOW SENSITIVE IS THE WERD DEVICE?
HOW THE WERD DEVICE WORKS
The Device detects for water in the drip tray or around the geyser (when installed vertically or horizontally) through the use of a Detector-cable. The Detector-cable sends a signal to the Controller when water is detected. The Controller then sends a signal to the Robot to close the lever valve thereby shutting off the cold water supply to the geyser. This process takes about six seconds. The device is also fitted with a high pitched alarm that sounds when water is detected as well as several indicator lights. The indicator lights mean the following:
- GREEN - The device is activated and is ready to detect water
- YELLOW - There is a fault detected
- RED - The device has detected water
WERD INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
If you would like to see a step by step video of how to do the installation, please visit our website at www.werd.co.za
Preparation:
- Switch off electricity to geyser at the geyser breaker switch on the DB board (electrical distribution board) or at the isolator switch close to the geyser.
- Make sure the incoming cold water supply has been shut off to the geyser.
- Open a hot water tap to release pressure in the pipes.(bath, basin, sink tap)
Installing the lever valve
- Install the lever valve on the incoming cold water supply to the geyser, after the stop cock and before the PRV (pressure reducing valve) in a horizontal upright position.(see diagram)
- Turn the water back on to make sure that there are no leaks.
Installing Robot on the lever valve
- Place the Robot over the leaver valve and make sure that the Robot arm fits over the lever valve handle.
- Take Robot bracket and secure it on the lever valve as well as the Robot, making sure to tighten it with the allen key provided. Make sure that the Robot bracket is securely tightened and is lined up with the lever valve handle in the open position.
- Tighten the Robot arm screws on opposite sides of the lever valve handle. The screws should be placed as close as possible to the handle to ensure a snug fit.
- Pull out the clutch ring and hold it there. Open and close the Robot arm to ensure that the arm moves freely and that there are no obstructions in the way.
- Release the clutch ring and wiggle the arm until you hear it click in place. The click noise confirms that the Robot is set in the correct position. The Robot arm must be in the open position.
Installing Controller
- Remove back plate from Controller.
- Install Controller back plate in an upright position no further away than 1 metre from the geyser. Make sure it is as close as possible to the isolator switch.
- Secure Controller onto back plate. Connect Controller cable (marked red) to the isolator switch and secure it.
- Connect Robot arm wire A (marked green) to Controller wire B (marked green) .
Installing Detector-cable
- Make sure all surfaces where tape must be applied are clean and dry.
- When you have a geyser with a drip tray you should place the Detector-cable in the drip tray and secure in place with tape provided.
- If you have a horizontal installation without a drip tray (non-compliant) secure the Detector-cable underneath the geyser along the length of the geyser surface.
- If you have a vertical installation without a drip tray (non-compliant) secure the Detector-cable around the circumference of the geyser as close to the bottom of the geyser as possible.
- Connect Detector-cable to detector wire (marked blue) using the insulated ferrels supplied.(use crimping tool)
- At all times make sure that the wire and the surfaces are dry.
Finalizing installation
- Tidy up installation by using cable ties to neatly secure all wires to the piping.
- Apply the small WERD sticker to the DB Board, close to the geyser breaker switch.
- Apply the large WERD sticker to the side of the geyser.
- Make sure the main water supply and electricity is switched back on.
- The Controller should show a green light.
- To test the device, use your index finger and thumb to squeeze the wire hard. The Controller’s red light will start flashing, indicating that it has picked up the moisture on your skin.
- After about three seconds an alarm will sound and the Robot arm will close the Lever valve.
- To reset the device, release the Detector cable and press the ‘test’ button on the Controller and hold it in. After 4 seconds the Robot arm will automatically open the Lever valve and the Controller light will become green. The WERD Device is now tested and armed and the installation is complete.

IMPORTANT!
- Installation of the Controller must not be further away than 1 metre from the geyser.
- The Controller may not be installed inside the drip tray or attached to the drip tray.
- The Controller may not be installed/attached to the geyser.
- The Controller should be securely fastened and in a vertical upright position.(see diagram)
- The installation must be done as per the diagram and as close as possible to the isolator switch. Do not install the Controller the wrong way around or upside down.(to prevent clogging of dust)
- The overall installation must comply with SANS 10142-1 and SANS 10252-1.
- The Controller wire (Marked Blue) has 2 detector wires. The second wire is only to be used where geysers are connected up in series.(an additional Detector cable(not provided) will be required )to protect a 2nd Geyser)
- Do not remove the existing stop cock in the roof due to Legislation.
- The Robot arm should be able to move freely without any obstructions(not to close to wall).
- The Robot and the lever valve may not be installed between the PRV and the drain cock of the geyser. Failure to do so will result in a non-compliant geyser installation. The WERD installation MUST NEVER intervene with the SANS 10254 specification.
- The supplied lever valve is compliant with SANS 0256-3 specifications and should be used for your installation. Should you wish to make use of your own lever valve, please note that it also needs to comply with SANS Regulations.
- The Detector-cable must be securely taped down to ensure maximum detection. Only use the highly adhesive tape supplied to ensure proper use.
- The WERD Device is only to be used indoors and is not suitable for outdoor purposes.
- Make sure the stickers are applied to the DB board and geyser for warranty and after-sales purposes.
RESETTING THE DEVICE after it has detected water
- If the Device detects water and it has been switched off by the Distribution Board(DB Board, marked HWC) or the isolator switch by the geyser to stop the alarm from sounding.
- Do inspection to see why the Robot has switched off the water supply to geyser.
- Manual reset: (if you have no electricity)
- Robot arm will be in the close position (as per diagram), pull the clutch ring down, hold it there, and reset the Robot arm manually to the open position. Once opened in full your incoming water supply will be open. Make sure the clutch ring goes back to its original position. Wiggle the Robot arm untill you hear the clutch ring click in place. See where the water is coming from(geyser or component).
- To close the water follow step no.4.
- If geyser needs to be replaced, remove Detecting cable out of drip tray or where ever it has been attached to the geyser. Disconnect it from the Detector and let it dry in a warm place.
- After the geyser or component has been replaced, install the Detecting cable in its original position. Make sure all surfaces are dry.
- Paste the wire down with a 80 micron foil tape.
- Switch back on electricity and go back to paragraph, "Testing the Device" and follow these steps.
